Schimmel 174

The Schimmel 174 is a mid-size Schimmel grand, roughly 174 cm, or about 5'8 1/2". That puts it in a useful home, teaching studio, and small performance-room size: larger and more developed than a small baby grand, but still manageable in many rooms.

For a used buyer, the important point is not just the model number. Schimmel has made pianos across different eras and series, and older 174/175 cm grands should be identified by the serial number, plate markings, fallboard branding, and country-of-origin markings before making assumptions about the exact series. A good Schimmel in this size can offer a refined European voice, but the individual piano's condition, regulation, voicing, and preparation matter most.

History of this model

Schimmel was founded in 1885 near Leipzig and later became associated with Braunschweig, Germany. The company introduced the Konzert Concept around 2000, and the modern catalogue now uses named series such as Konzert, Classic, Wilhelm Schimmel, Europe, and Fridolin Schimmel.

The current Schimmel catalogue does not treat “174” as the main current model name. Nearby current references include the Konzert K175 at 175 cm and Classic grands in nearby sizes, but those specifications should not automatically be applied to every older Schimmel 174. This page should be read as a useful model-family and size-class guide, not as a guarantee that every Schimmel 174 has the same construction details.
What to check on a used Schimmel 174:

- Confirm the serial number, year, and country of origin.
- Confirm whether the piano is an older German Schimmel, a later Konzert/Classic-family instrument, or another series.
- Check action wear, hammer shape, regulation, voicing, tuning stability, soundboard, bridges, pinblock, and cabinet condition.
- Compare the tone in the actual room. These pianos can be clear and singing, but the preparation of the individual instrument decides how it plays.

In practical terms, this size is for someone who wants more musical body than a very small grand, but does not have room for a 6'4" or larger instrument. It is worth trying beside Yamaha, Kawai, Boston, and other European grands in the same size range, because the tonal character can be quite different.
