About Schimmel Pianos

Schimmel is a German piano maker founded by Wilhelm Schimmel in 1885 near Leipzig and later centered in Braunschweig. The brand is worth knowing because different eras and series can mean different things: older German Schimmels, modern Konzert and Classic instruments from Braunschweig, Wilhelm Schimmel instruments made in Europe, and Fridolin Schimmel instruments built as the entry line.

Schimmel's own history points to a few useful design themes: compact piano design in the 1930s and 1950s, computer-aided development beginning in the 1980s, and the Konzert Concept around 2000, where ideas from larger concert instruments were transferred into smaller grands and uprights where practical. Current product information also points to details such as layered pinblocks, careful hammer voicing, and, on specific Konzert models, Schimmel action work made by Renner. Those details should be used model by model, not as a blanket claim for every older piano.

Company context matters too. Schimmel established a Kalisz, Poland production facility in the 2000s for the Wilhelm Schimmel line, and in 2016 entered a strategic alliance with Pearl River. That does not make every Schimmel the same product. The exact series, serial number, year, and country-of-origin markings are still important.

For buyers, the name is a good starting point, not the whole answer. A used Schimmel should be judged by the individual piano: scale size, soundboard and bridge condition, action wear, regulation, voicing, tuning stability, cabinet condition, and how the instrument has lived. A well-prepared German Schimmel can have a clear, refined European voice, but condition and preparation matter more than the logo alone.

Current Schimmel series include Konzert, Classic, Wilhelm Schimmel, Europe, and Fridolin Schimmel. Konzert and Classic are the German premium lines. Wilhelm Schimmel and Europe sit in a more accessible European-made category. Fridolin is the entry line. When comparing pianos, confirm the exact series, serial number, year, and country of origin rather than assuming every Schimmel is the same product.
