Abel Hammers
Abel hammers are high-quality piano hammers made in Germany, known for consistent felt density and careful molding. They’re used by many rebuilders and manufacturers as an upgrade part because they offer a clear, singing tone with good dynamic range and stable voicing. Abel produces several hammer styles to match different piano designs, allowing the technician to shape the sound through voicing and regulation.
Solid Spruce soundboard
A solid spruce soundboard is a single piece (or matched set of pieces) of spruce wood used as the main resonating surface inside a piano. Spruce is chosen because it is strong and light, with long, straight grain that transmits vibration efficiently. When the strings vibrate, the bridge passes that energy into the soundboard, which amplifies the sound and gives the piano its character. A solid spruce board allows natural resonance and overtones to develop in a way that feels alive and responsive, especially as the instrument is played in over time.
Agraffes
Agraffes are small brass fittings used on many grand pianos to guide the strings at the front of the speaking length. Each agraffe has holes that set the exact height and lateral spacing of the strings as they cross the plate and approach the tuning pins. By fixing this point firmly, the agraffe helps define the vibrating length of the string, reduces side-to-side movement, and promotes a clean termination of the string so the tone is clear and consistent. They’re mainly used in the bass and lower-middle sections; higher treble notes usually use a capo bar instead.
